“For He made Him who knew no sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21
To be righteous means to be in ‘right standing’ with God, meaning you and I would need to uphold all of the laws of God without making a mistake to be made righteous. But God, who is rich in mercy and wisdom, decided to make us righteous through our faith in the works of Jesus Christ. Jesus fulfilled the law, and we know who we are in Him and are now declared righteous. Your sinful nature came as a consequence of what Adam did. Yes, Adam’s only sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and a new life for everyone. You and I were born sinners not because of our actions but because of what Adam did. This is the same way we received righteousness; It is because of Jesus’ act of righteousness. When you received Jesus in your life, you became the righteousness of God.
